The Sender ID is what your recipients see instead of a phone number. Getting it right affects both deliverability and brand recognition. This guide explains the SMS Sender ID types, which countries require pre-registration, and how to apply for one.

What Is an SMS Sender ID?

An SMS Sender ID is the “from” field on an incoming text — the name or number your customer sees as the sender. It can be your brand name (e.g. SMSPM, MyStore), a regular phone number, or a shortcode. The type you use changes what recipients see, whether they can reply, and whether the message is even delivered in certain countries.

Types of Sender IDs

Alphanumeric Sender ID

A custom text string up to 11 characters — typically your brand name (e.g. SMSPM, MyStore). Recipients cannot reply, but they see your brand name immediately.

Best for: Marketing messages, notifications, alerts.

Numeric Sender ID

A standard phone number. Recipients can reply, and it is accepted in countries that block alphanumeric senders.

Best for: Two-way communication, markets with restrictions.

Shortcode

A 5-6 digit number, typically shared or dedicated. High throughput, widely supported, but requires carrier approval and comes at higher cost.

Best for: High-volume campaigns, OTPs, regulated industries.

Which Sender ID Should You Use?

If you need…UseNotes
Brand recognition in marketingAlphanumericUp to 11 chars; no replies; blocked in some markets (US, India)
Two-way conversationNumeric long codeWorks where alphanumeric is blocked; supports replies
Maximum throughput / OTP at scaleShortcodeCarrier approval + higher cost
US recipients10DLC or toll-freeAlphanumeric not supported — see A2P 10DLC

When in doubt, SMSPM falls back to a deliverable numeric route automatically so your message still gets through.

Countries That Require Pre-Registration

Some countries mandate that alphanumeric sender IDs be pre-registered with local carriers before use. Key examples:

  • India — TRAI regulations require DLT registration
  • United States — Alphanumeric senders are not supported; 10DLC or shortcodes required
  • Australia — Sender ID registration via carriers
  • Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand — Pre-registration required

SMSPM handles sender ID registration for supported markets. Contact support to initiate the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an SMS Sender ID? It’s the name or number recipients see as the sender of your text — your brand name (alphanumeric), a phone number (numeric), or a shortcode.

Can I use my brand name as the sender? Yes, as an alphanumeric sender ID (up to 11 characters) in markets that allow it. It’s blocked in the US and India, where you need a registered numeric ID or 10DLC.

Do I need to register a sender ID? For alphanumeric senders, yes in many countries (India, Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and others). Numeric and shortcode routes have their own rules — see the country list above.

How long does approval take? SMSPM typically reviews and activates a requested sender ID within 1–3 business days for supported markets.

Once approved, your sender ID is available in the SMS composer.

Budgeting for messaging? Your sender ID is only part of the cost — see our Bulk SMS Cost guide for the full per-message pricing model and a free calculator.
