Format and validate phone numbers for SMS delivery

Formatting Tips

  • E.164 is the standard format for international SMS: +[country code][number]
  • Always include the country code for international delivery
  • Remove spaces, dashes, and parentheses from numbers
  • Mobile numbers are required for SMS delivery

What is E.164?

E.164 is the international standard for phone numbers: a leading +, the country code, and the subscriber number, with no spaces, dashes, or parentheses — for example +14155550123. SMSPM (and most carriers) require E.164 so messages route to the correct country.

Why formatting matters for SMS delivery

A number stored as (415) 555-0123 or 0412 345 678 may fail silently or bill incorrectly if sent as-is. Normalizing to E.164 before sending prevents failed deliveries, wrong-country routing, and wasted credits. Validate every number at the point of capture — see the OTP guide's phone number validation section for the code pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the E.164 format?

It's +[country code][subscriber number] with no formatting characters — the format all international SMS is sent in.

Does the formatter validate the number?

Yes. It checks the number against known country rules and flags invalid entries, not just reformatting text.

Is the phone number formatter free?

Yes — it runs in your browser, no account needed.
